Greetings from the Chairman
Hiroyuki Watanabe

ITS Info-communications Forum is attended by around 100 cross-industrial private and government organizations involved in the promotion of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) to drive R&D and standardization of the ITS info-communications systems as well as their promotional activities. Since its establishment in 1999, the Forum has generated useful results including DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communications) draft standards.

Currently, VICS and ETC as part of ITS took root as the road traffic systems and are contributing to enhanced mobility of people and goods, however, our road traffic systems are still faced with many challenges such as providing solutions to reduce the number of traffic accidents and congestion as well as developing low-carbon transport systems.

The i-Japan Strategy 2015 which the Cabinet approved in summer 2009 evolves from the New IT Reform Strategy adopted in 2006 and sets the direction of the ICT strategy toward realization of our future society that leverages digital technologies and information.

Under the strategy, ITS is designed to aim at streamlining our social systems and revitalizing related industries by reducing traffic accidents, solving road congestion and achieving efficient logistics systems through acceleration of practical applications and disseminations of the safe driving support systems based on infrastructure and vehicle cooperation. Therefore, ITS is expected to play more roles as an effective method to solve issues in Japan.

At this crucial time when expectations and interests to ITS are anticipated to build up, we will continue to operate this Forum for further promotion of R&D and standardization on the ITS info-communication systems as well as their dissemination and education activities.
